Understanding the Teen Vaping Crisis & Its Dangers
Vaping is a method of smoking that uses a small, hand-held device such as an e-cigarette or electronic vaporizer.
According to the 2024 National Youth Tobacco Survey, over 2.25 million teens reported using an e-cigarette or vape, and 26% of them reported using one daily. Although the rates of cigarette use have decreased over the past decade, the rates of vaping have increased.
Vaping can damage vital organs and increase the risk of long-term chronic health problems. It can also affect mood and brain function—increasing the risk of mental health disorders like depression or anxiety.
Recognizing the Signs of Teen Vaping Use & Addiction
Identifying the warning signs of vaping in teens enables early intervention and effective support. Some of the signs include:
- Finding empty vape cartridges or boxes in their room or belongings. Vapes can sometimes be difficult to recognize, resembling pens or USBs.
- Smelling minty, fruity, or sweet scents coming from their breath or clothes that may linger shortly after use.
- Shortness of breath or a chronic cough that is not explained by another medical condition, such as asthma, allergies, or the common cold.
- Dry mouth and nose, causing increased thirst, chapped lips, and nosebleeds.
- Loss of appetite or unexplained stomach problems such as nausea or heartburn.
- Anxiety, aggression, or irritability, especially when they are craving nicotine and can’t access their vape.
What Causes Teenage Vaping Addiction?
Teens begin vaping for a number of reasons. Some are influenced by peers, perhaps trying a friend’s vape or doing it in social situations. Others may vape to cope with stress or anxiety, which can provide short-term relief but, over time, actually increase mental health problems like stress, anxiety, and depression.
Some teens are at a naturally higher risk of vaping if they struggle with an “oral fixation”. This is known as the desire or need to always have something in your mouth. Examples of this often include vaping or smoking, chewing gum, or nail biting.
Our Teen Vaping Addiction Program
We offer comprehensive vaping addiction treatment with individual, group, and family therapies. Therapy focuses on challenging thought patterns and behaviors related to drug use and then altering behaviors.
Levels of Care Offered at Clearfork Academy
At Clearfork Academy we offer several levels of care.
Detox
The first step in the healing process is either medically supervised detoxification or a safe, supportive stabilization period, depending upon what they are vaping and their treatment needs. Sometimes teens don’t know that there is fentanyl or other synthetic drugs in their vaping oil. We medically monitor clients for any symptoms at all times. If detox procedures are needed we will apply them.
For nicotine addiction, we combat cravings with EMDR therapy, over-the-counter medications, and talk therapy. If necessary, we can use nicotine replacement therapy with patches.
Residential Treatment
We offer a structured residence where teenagers live away from home and take intensive therapy and counseling. With the support of our therapists and counselors, teens learn coping skills and develop positive changes in behavior and attitude.
Individualized therapy, group sessions, family therapy, and educational support are all part of the program.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
PHP is a transition program for teens who are ready to move beyond full-time residential treatment but could still benefit from a more intensive support structure. For those teens stepping down from full-time residential treatment, PHP aids in long-term recovery as it allows teens to return to their new everyday lives while providing structured treatment.
The PHP program consists of four hours of group therapy, individual therapy, and family therapy, as clinically appropriate.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Our IOP program can serve as a step-down process after completion of the PHP program. It includes three hours of group therapy, individual therapy, and family therapy as clinically appropriate. The IOP program is centered around your teen’s emotional growth and the development of coping skills.
Alumni Program
The goal of our program is to foster ongoing connections between former patients, their families, and us by:
- Monitoring participants closely
- Providing timely assistance during challenging moments
- Celebrating their achievements and milestones with the alumni members
We have developed a robust community of alumni, who support each other in their recovery journey and maintain active engagement. This program is a critical success factor in your teen’s recovery.
