Targeting The Root of Opioid Addiction

Opioids are a widespread problem across the US for both adults and teens. We understand watching a loved one struggle in the grips of an opioid disorder can be distressing.

One of the most common ways teens get addicted to opioids are through sports injuries. Teens may be prescribed painkillers, and develop an addiction that can take over their lives. It’s important for parents to be mindful of the signs their teen could be abusing opioids in order to provide early intervention and proper support.

Commonly abused opioids include:

  • Codeine
  • Morphine
  • Hydrocodone
  • Oxycodone
  • Heroin
  • Fentanyl

Stats provided by the CDC on teen overdoses. This is alarming for parents.

Recognize The Signs

Teens may try to hide the signs, but it’s essential for parents to be aware of the red flags of opioid abuse.

  • Drowsiness
  • Isolation
  • Small pupils
  • Changes in sleep/appetite
  • Secretive behavior
  • Flu-like symptoms (nausea, vomiting, runny nose, sweating)
  • Unexplained weight gain or loss
  • Sudden decline in academic performance

Causes of Teenage Opioid Addiction

Our empathetic team understands the challenges of treating drug use in teens. Teens may be more prone to both trying and getting addicted to substances. Some potential causes that heighten the risk of teenage opioid abuse include:

  • Sports injuries and getting prescribed painkillers
  • Coping with physical, sexual or emotional abuse
  • Family history of drug abuse
  • Availability of opioids in the home
  • Academic pressure
  • Community drug problems and violence
  • Underlying mental health disorders such as trauma, depression or anxiety

Levels of Care Offered at Clearfork Academy

Clearfork Academy tailors treatment for opioid addiction to the unique needs of each teen we serve. However, there are levels of care and some general steps that our treatment center follows:

  • Detox: The process of removing opioids from the body. This is done in a supervised medical setting to monitor your child’s health. Withdrawal from opioids can be dangerous if not monitored. Medications may be provided to reduce cravings or ease withdrawal symptoms.
  • Residential Treatment: We offer inpatient rehab in a structured setting to help teens focus on their long-term recovery. It involves individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy and other support services to help address the root of addiction and build healthy coping strategies for the future.
  • Partial Hospitalization Program: Our PHP functions as a midpoint for teens who are ready to move beyond full-time residential treatment, but could still benefit from a more intensive support structure. This model allows teens to continue their recovery while transitioning to their regular home and school environment.
  • Intensive Outpatient: Our intensive outpatient program provides a balanced approach to substance abuse treatment, allowing teens to live at home while still receiving treatment. Our IOP can serve as a step-down after completion of residential and PHP. It focuses on your teen’s emotional growth and developing positive coping skills.

Over 80,000 Americans overdosed on opioids in 2022.
